What is a soy nut?

People ask us all the time if we are peanut and tree nut free why do we call our product SoyNut Butter? The answer is two parts. First, there is no such thing as a soy “nut.” It is a bean that our product is made from.

Second, when we first set out to sell our product we tried just calling it Soy Butter, but that was confusing to everyone we asked. It sounded like a replacement for dairy butter and a product that should be in the dairy section of the store.

So since our goal was to create the ultimate peanut butter substitute, we chose the name SoyNut Butter to help new buyers quickly understand how they might use our product.

Even though we made up the name, just like Kleenex, Xerox and Fax, we’re pretty sure our SoyNut Butter will become a household word since millions of school children and lots of grownups regularly enjoy its “nutty” taste.

“Dear SoyNut Butter ….

On behalf of my 9 year old son, I just wanted to write and say THANK YOU.

Several years ago he was having repeated bouts of mild nausea. It wasn’t enough to hospitalize him, but it was enough to cause discomfort and interrupt life. Through a great deal of trial and error, we discovered that it was one of his favorite foods that was doing this to him…….peanut butter. It was very sad to tell a six year old little boy that he could no longer eat something that he found to be so delicious – but for the sake of alleviating the nausea, he complied with the new house rule.

Several weeks ago, while walking through the grocery store, my son noticed your product “Original Creamy SoyNut Butter” on the shelf. He also noticed the words “peanut free” on the label, and requested that we buy it. It has been love at first taste! He eats it on toast, he eats it with jelly, he eats it with honey; in short, he uses and enjoys your product every bit as much as he did peanut butter. The very next week he insisted that we buy another jar of it – even though we still had some at home – as he wanted to be sure that the grocer knew that this product had a following and that they should continue to keep stocking it.

He says, “It makes me feel happy because I can finally eat something that tastes as good as peanut butter.”

He’s also wondering if we can use it in recipes such as “peanut butter cookies” etc., and when will you be coming out with  a chocolate/SoyNut Butter cup candy bar???

Thank you!
Tim, PA

Thank you Tim. And one of the awesome features of our SoyNut Butter is that it’s a peanut butter substitute you can cook with. You’ll see that we’re adding recipes to our blog regularly. We hope you’ll check them out!

What is the connection between peanut and tree nut allergies

You’ll see from our web site and from our labels that SoyNut Butter products, and our granolas are not only peanut and tree nut free, but they’re also made in peanut and tree nut free facilities.

According to the Food Allery Initiative organization (www.faiusa.org), 30-40% of people who have peanut allergy are also allergic to tree nuts. The list of tree nuts is defined by law to include:

•Almond
•Brazil nut
•Cashew
•Chestnut
•Hazelnut/Filbert
•Macadamia nut
•Pecan
•Pine nut (Pignolia nut)
•Pistachio
•Walnut

Why are all tree nuts commonly considered together? Again, from our friends at www.faiusa.org, the reason is that people are seldom allergic to just one kind of tree nut. That explains why allergists typically tell these patients to avoid all tree nuts.

Like peanut allergy, tree nut allergy isn’t something people outgrow. In fact only about 20 percent of peanut allergic children outgrow their allergy. And only about 9 percent of tree nut allergic children end up outgrowing this allergy.

For more details, and to learn how to avoid peanuts and tree nuts check out www.faiusa.org
